About us

Over the last few years the old treacle mines around Dudley have gradually been filled in and local cavers have travelled further afield to continue their underground exploration. It is little surprise therefore that the caves of South Wales have become a regular choice for Midlands explorers to travel to. Over the years a great deal of photography has been carried out in the caves of South Wales and have formed the backbone of an archive of pictures of this important caving area.

Constructed in one of the last disused treacle mines in Dudley, these pages provide a photographic guide to the caves of South Wales. These pages cover a good portion of the caves and over the coming months we aim to extend the coverage to the majority of the caves in this area. We are continually adding more information and photos to this site, if you feel that any information is missing or incorrect, then please contact us at the link at the bottom of the page.

Google mapping resources

Many of the pages on this site utilise Google maps to act as a container for the information on the caves, allowing you to see the location of the cave along with other sites of speleological interest. Below is a list of resources you may find useful if you were wishing to utilise Google maps in a similar way.

Browser compatibilty

To produce the mapping pages we use transparent images that are overlaid on top of the Google maps and satellite imagery. Internet browsers handle this type of graphic with varying degrees of elegance, Internet Explorer 6 being particularly poor. If you are using IE6 then you should upgrade to the latest version as you will be missing a great deal of functionality on this site and others. The mapping pages are tested and work well with all browsers (assuming you have downloaded the latest version), with Firefox being the best at rendering the pages.

Cave Access

These pages have been constructed to give viewers a feel for the caves, it should not be taken that this in itself confers the right to access. It is important that you check the access procedures for each cave before you visit as many are on private land and special access agreements may be in place. On each of the cave pages we have included a link to the Cambrian Caving Council who hold the latest access details for each of the caves.

Going Caving ?

These pages are produced as a reference for cavers or for people who may have an interest in caves of this area. If you are not already a caver and would like to explore caves, we would recommend that you join an organised caving club so that you have a safe introduction to this facinating sport. Most of the major caving clubs of South Wales are listed on our links page or you can visit the try caving website for more options
